VNC

You can connect to Ponyland using VNC.

Windows users can easily connect to the VNC-server here. You need to Start the VNC server first. To use your own client, please refer to: VNC Clients.

Log in to the wiki to automatically fill in these values
Your Ponyland account name
The machine you started 'vncstart' on
The Display number that was assigned to you.
 • Requires Java-Plugin and Windows
 • You will be asked your SSH password, and then your VNC password.

Starting the VNC Server

First, connect to one of the servers on Ponyland, and run the following script (on any machine, as long as it's not the old Applejack applejack.science.ru.nl):

/vol/customopt/config/scripts/vnc/vncstart

The first time

 • You will be assigned a Display number. The display number will be assigned to you permanently.
 • The script will pause for you to give a password (without explicitly saying so) and then again so you can repeat it (again, without explicitly saying so).

Using the terminal

 • Use the program called Konsole, not terminal
 • Tab completion won't work out of the box, because the tab key is used for switching windows. To override this, in file ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml change
<property name="<Super>Tab" type="string" value="switch_window_key"/>

to

<property name="<Super>Tab" type="empty"/>

Advanced users: manually start VNC Server

If you prefer to start the VNC server manually, that's fine, but please use the following script to determine your display number:

/vol/customopt/config/scripts/vnc/vncdisplay.py
># Display number for johndoe is :20

It will permanently assign a unique display number to you. If everyone uses this script, there can never be conflicts.
